Service Story

In September 1915, William Andrews described himself as a 27 year old single sailor who had been born and raised in George Town. He was allotted to the 7th reinforcements for the 26th battalion. On reaching Egypt he was taken on strength with the 12th Battalion and remained with this unit until returned to Australia in May 1919 having been wounded in action on two separate occasions—first at Mouquet Farm in August 1916 and at Pradelles in April 1918 when the village was heavily bombed. Two brothers also served with the 12th Battalion—Clarence who was killed in action at Boursies in April 1917 and Hughie who returned in July 1919. Little else is known about William, except that he did not marry and that he died at the Launceston General Hospital on 13 September 1950 aged 82
