Service Story

Leslie Worker would serve with three different units during his four years in the AIF. Initially with the 26th Battalion, then with the 12th Battalion and later with the Australian Corps Headquarters. Whilst serving with the 12th Battalion, he acted as an escort to Lieutenant General William Birdwood on 10 April 1916. The exact circumstances as to the nature of the visit by Birdwood is unclear. His brother Corporal Herbert Worker was killed in action whilst serving with the 26th Battalion. Another brother James also served with the 26th Battalion. It would appear that like Welsh and Withers, Leslie Worker did not marry. On his discharge he re-joined his family at Branxholm and later moved to Storey’s Creek where he worked as a fireman.
