Service Story

Private Gilbert Frank Hyland served as a solider in the D Company of 40th Battalion. He was born in Glenorchy Tasmania and was the only child of Michael James Hyland. He worked as a labourer and was a member of the Church of England. Gilbert Signed up with the Army in Claremont Tasmania on the 15th of March 1916 at the age of 19. Gilbert embarked upon HMAT A35 Berrima on the 1st of July 1916 in Hobart Tasmania. Gilbert was discharged on the 12th of October 1916 to Cape Town hospital due to illness caused by Goitre. Gilbert passed away at the age of 62 in Hobart Tasmania.
