Service Story

George Cleaver was a 26 year old single seaman from Sandy Bay. He volunteered for enlistment on 27 September 1916 and was allotted to the 25th reinforcements for the 12th Battalion, departing Australia in June 1917 per the HMAT A20 Hororata.

He had volunteered for enlistment on 2 previous occasions, but had been discharged each time. On the second occasion it was stated that he was un-suitable. It was likely that the authorities here had reservations about his suitability given some of the comments in his reports. These were later borne out when he was hospitalised at Cape Town on the way to England. George Cleaver did not see any front line service being returned to Australia several months later for discharge.
