Service Story

Edward Arthur Maher fought in the 40th Battalion alongside many of his Tasmanian compatriots. Edward worked at the Mercury office for 7 years as a painter prior to enlisting at Claremont at the age of 43 on the 27th of January 1916. He embarked on the HMAT Berrima A35 on the 1st of July 1916 where his journey to war began. From Tasmania, Edward then travelled to France and then further on to Southampton before returning to Tasmania on the 25th of March 1919. Edward died on the 22nd of February 1940. He was buried in the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
