Service Story
Charles McCallum, a married blacksmith from Hobart, enlisted as a Private into the AIF, Railway Unit section 4, on the 19th of January 1917 aged 38. He embarked with his unit from Melbourne on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 11th of May 1917 for France, via England. As a member of 4th Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company, he served on the Western Front. Their work was vital to keeping supplies; goods, ammunitions and men, up to the front lines. He left England to return to Australia on the 23rd of July 1919, arriving back on the 10th of September 1919. He was discharged at Hobart on the 21st October 1919. Research by Ashlee Campbell.
