Service Story

Alfred was initially allotted to B Company 40th Battalion when he enlisted in February 1916. At the time of his enlistment he was a 24 year old single illiterate labourer from Launceston. On reaching France in December 1916 he was transferred to the 12th Battalion. He was wounded in action at Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917 sustaining gunshot wounds to his face and left elbow that were later treated at Etaples before evacuation to England. After further treatment he embarked on 15 February 1918 for return to Australia. In July 1918 Alfred Mansfield married Annie Lee at Launceston. Together they had four sons.
