Andrew Sydney Brooks enlisted on 10 May 1918. He stated that he was a 20 year old farmer and orchardist from Lilydale and had spent time with the local militia. Apparently Andrew did not get his parents’ permission. He had been wanting to enlist for two years, but knew that parental permission would not be forthcoming. In June his father wrote to the Camp Commandant asking that his son not go to war. Apparently he had suffered with asthma as a child and his father believed that the rough life at the Front would bring it on again. Also he was their only son. Andrew Brooks was discharged on 24 June 1918.
