071 – Private Lewis Sturzaker

Private Lewis Sturzaker 40th Battalion

Lewis was quite a bit older than George Smith or Leonard Smart—being 34 year of age, a single farmer from Westbury.  He was allotted to ‘D’ Company. Private Sturzaker was seriously wounded in action at Broodseinde sustaining a gunshot wound to his back. His injury would continue to plague him for the rest of his life.

Lewis died in 1938 aged 56 years. He was later buried in the Westbury Cemetery. The name of Private Lewis Sturzaker is recorded on the Roll of Honour that hangs in the Westbury Town Hall, a gift to the town by Ellen Nora ‘Nellie’ Payne.
