Horace was the only son of Edgar and Camilla Bird and much loved by his five sisters. At 18 years, 2 months he enlisted on 24 January 1918. He was initially allotted to the group of reinforcements leaving on the HMAT A14 Borda. On disembarking in England he was transferred to Artillery Details, just one month before the end of hostilities. In March 1919 he joined the Graves Registration Detachment. Six months later he commenced the return trip and discharge from the A.I.F.
In 1922 he married Myrtle Frances Smith, worked as a carrier and resided at Devonport until his death in April 1948, aged 48 years. He was later buried in the Devonport General Cemetery.
